Disney's live-action Aladdin movie will hit theaters on May 24, 2019.
Entertainment Weekly spoke with director, Guy Ritchie and Will Smith, reprises Robin Williams' iconic 1992 role as the Genie.
According to Comicbook.com, instead of trying to recreate Williams' Genie, Will Smith is working hard to inject his own personality and flavor into the character.
Smith told Entertainment Weekly that he wanted to deliver something that was an homage to Robin Williams but was musically different.
Smith explains, "Just the flavor of the character would be different enough and unique enough that it would be in a different lane, versus trying to compete.?
One Disney executive called Smith's take on the role, "Part Fresh Prince, Part Hitch."
Smith added, ?I think it?ll stand out as unique even in the Disney world...There hasn?t been a lot of that hip-hop flavor in Disney history."
Guy Ritchie added, "The great thing about the role of the Genie is that it?s essentially a hyperbole for who that individual actor is, so it?s a wonderful platform and tapestry for an actor to fill his boots on.?
