1. She got criticized about her unconventional looks in the 1970's, but that's also what made her stand out and initially land roles in James Garner-Debbie Reynolds comedy, ?How Sweet It Is!? and also Farrah Fawcett?s bestie in a Head & Shoulders shampoo ad.
2. She was born Carole Penny Marshall. She was the middle child of an Italian-American family and went to the University of New Mexico before taking a risk to try acting and move to California in 1967.
3. Her thick Bronx accent, charm, and comedic chops made her a TV favorite, when she and Cindy Williams hit it big with the ?Happy Days? spin-off ?Laverne & Shirley.?
4. ?Laverne & Shirley? ran from 1976 to 1983 and gained success because it spoke to women who were both in and out of the workforce.
5. Penny directed "Jumpin? Jack Flash? and ?Big,? with Tom Hanks, which made her the first woman to direct a film that made over $100 million.
