VIDEO : ?Green Book? Star Mahershala Ali Apologized To His Character?s Family

The family of Mahershala Ali?s character in ?Green Book,? Dr. Don Shirley, is not happy with the film.
In an interview with Shadow & Act, Edwin Shirley III, nephew of the late jazz legend, called watching ?Green Book? a ?jarring? experience.
Don?s brother, Dr. Maurice Shirley, called it a ?symphony of lies.?
They said that no one in Shirley?s family was consulted during development of the film, which led Ali to call and apologize for not reaching out.
What he said was, ?If I have offended you, I am so, so terribly sorry. I did the best I could with the material I had?
I was not aware that there were close relatives with whom I could have consulted to add some nuance to the character.'?

The film tells the story of a growing friendship between Shirley and his hired chauffeurs, Tony ?Lip? Vallelonga; a friendship the Shirleys say did not exist.
