In 2016, Barry Jenkins won the Academy Award for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay for 'Moonlight.' Two years later he's returned with ?If Beale Street Could Talk,? which is an adaptation of James Baldwin?s critically acclaimed novel of the same name. The film stars newcomer Kiki Layne as Tish, whose soulmate and fiancé Fonny is arrested for a crime he didn?t commit. In playing the character, Layne said she learned a lot "about what it means to be vulnerable." Jenkins said it's important for his characters to exhibit vulnerability "because vulnerability is not a sign of weakness. If anything, it?s a sign of strength."
