According to Comicbook.com, filmmaker Guillermo del Toro's upcoming take on Pinocchio will be both dark and political. The upcoming movie will be set in Italy during the 1930s during the rise of Mussolini. Del Toro has explained that the movie is "not a Pinocchio for all the family" as it takes place during the rise of fascism. He says that Pinocchio " has to learn about failure and pain and loneliness." The film is set to hit theaters in 2021.
