Obama later told The New Yorker why he was so moved by Franklin's performance. He said she transformed "hardship and sorrow" into "something full of beauty and vitality and hope." Obama said the Queen of Soul's singing embodied what America stands for. Obama and Franklin had a longstanding friendship. She sang a beautiful rendition of "My Country 'Tis of Thee" at his 2009 inauguration. Aretha Franklin died on Thursday, August 16 in her Detroit home.
