According to The Huffington Post, Scarlett Johansson will star in ?Rub & Tug.?
Directed by Rupert Sanders, the film is being marketed as a mob drama, like ?American Hustle.?
Johansson will play Dante ?Tex? Gill, described by some news outlets as a transgender man.
Dante operated a slew of massage parlors in the 1970's in Pittsburgh?s underground sex industry.
But Scarlett Johansson's decision to play a transgender man is reportedly not going over well.
She received some negative responses on Twitter including comments like, "Look, I?ve really liked Scarlett Johansson in some of her films, but I think the actor playing a trans man should BE a trans man if at all possible."
Scarlett's rep responded with a statement.
"Tell them that they can be directed to Jeffrey Tambor, Jared Leto, and Felicity Huffman?s reps for comment."
The reps' statement suggests that you don't have to be trans to win critical acclaim for a portrayal.
