Longtime BET executive, Debra Lee, is leaving.
On Thursday the Black Entertainment Television network announced that Lee would be stepping down as Chairman and CEO.
She joined BET in 1986 as vice president and general counsel. Lee has been Chairman/CEO since 2005 and in 2017 elected Scott M. Mills as the new president of the company.
She wrote in a statement, "I saw my role as the protector of the BET brand and its employees and today, more than 32 years later, I still see myself as the protector and defender of a brand that I have helped to grow as a top destination for audiences across the globe."
Although no reason was cited for her departure, Viacom CEO, Bob Bakish shared kind words about her contribution to the network.
He said, ?Debra?s vision and creativity have cemented BET Networks as a premier network for African Americans and lovers of black culture.?
Lee has not announced her next move, but says that she'll remain in media and active in corporate and non-profit boards.
This includes her work with Times Up and The Recording Academy Diversity & Inclusion Task Force.
