Until recently, Amy Sherald was little known outside of certain artworld circles. That is, until she unveiled of the most anticipated portraits in decades. Sherald's enormous canvas of former first lady Michelle Obama is now on view in Washington, DC?s National Portrait Gallery. She beat out 2,500 entrants to become the first woman to win the Smithsonian?s prestigious 2016 Portrait Competition. Her first major solo show will open at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis in May.
