According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gyllenhaal is currently in talks for the role.
The film is slated to shoot this summer.
Ryan Gosling was up for the role before it was offered to Gyllenhaal.
Earlier rumors had Matt Damon pegged as Mysterio, but he rejected the part.
