For the fourth consecutive year, Harry Potter author J.K Rowling has apologized for killing off a popular character. The author does this each year to mark the anniversary of the Battle of Hogwarts, which took place on May 2, 1998. This year Rowling apologized for killing Dobby the House Elf. While the Harry Potter series is ripe with messages of friendship and magic, death also plays a prominent role. The deaths of beloved characters like Albus Dumbledore and Sirius Black were as painful for readers as they were for Rowling. Although Dobby did not die in the Battle of Hogwarts he was well loved by fans, and essential in giving key players in the fight a chance at success.
