Within comedy, Garry Shandling is seen as a trailbrazer. He was also known for being extremely generous to his fellow artists. Shandling died on March 24, 2016 at age 66. He starred on ?The Larry Sanders Show,? an HBO hit that ran for six seasons from 1992 to 1998. Now he's the focus of a two-part documentary on HBO directed by Judd Apatow. Apatow says Shandling always "played by his own rules, he didn?t follow trends." He also said the documentary is so personal thanks to Shandling's personal diary entries. Shandling was a Buddhist and Apatow says there was a "deep spiritual underpinning" to comedian's creative work.
