CBS has found its leading man for its L.A. Confidential reboot.
Sense8 star Brian J. Smith has been tapped to take on the lead role of Detective Ed Exley, the part played by Guy Pearce in the 1997 feature film.
CBS described its L.A. Confidential take as giving James Ellroy's novel a "2018 treatment" in terms of tone, music and style. The paths of three homicide detectives, a female reporter and an up-and-coming actress intersect while the detectives pursue a sadistic serial killer among the secrets and lies of glamorous and gritty 1950s Los Angeles.
Smith's Ed Exley is described as cold (though not without a conscience), brilliant, authoritative and ambitious. He's a uniformed L.A. cop and the son of former hero detective-turned-real estate developer, Preston Exley, he is determined to make his mark and to become a hero in his father's eyes. Competing against the memory of his deceased brother, his father's favorite, Ed will do anything to prove himself. He wants nothing more than to make detective and is single-minded in his pursuit.
Smith's credits include Stargate Universe, Gossip Girl and the upcoming feature 22 Chaser. He's repped by Innovative and Sanders Armstrong Caserta. Smith joins Walton Goggins in CBS' L.A. Confidential.
Jordan Harper (Gotham) penned the script and exec produces alongside Arnon Milchan. Michael Dinner will also exec produce and direct the pilot. The drama hails from New Regency, Lionsgate Television and CBS Television Studios.
