Martin McDonagh understands the backlash of having a likeable racist police man in 'Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri'.
McDonagh wrote and directed the new comedy/drama starring Frances McDormand, Woody Harrelson and Sam Rockwell.
In the film Rockwell plays the racist police officer Jason Dixon.
McDonagh told The Times newspaper he understand what the backlash is about.
He said he feels the backlash "doesn't really see the nuance of the story."
To McDonagh the film is messy and more interesting than a typical Hollywood movie about heroes and villains.
