According to Nielsen's year-end report on the music industry, for the time in history, hip-hop has passed rock as the most popular genre in the US. Popularity in the report is measured in terms of "total consumption" which includes album sales and album-equivalent streaming figures. In fact, Kendrick Lamar's album "DAMN" took the number two spot, just a few thousand away from Ed Sheeran's "Divide." And as for most popular artists of 2017, Drake and Kendrick Lamar took the number and number two spots.
