Even though the de Peyster family has never met Tom Hanks, a typewriter from the actor arrived on their doorstep in New England last Saturday after they wrote to him to ask for one. The family, along with their teenage sons, had just gone to see the documentary "California Typewriter," which focuses on artists and writers who work with the largely obsolete machines. Hanks, who collects typewriters and appears in the movie, estimates that he owns around 250 and that "90 percent of them are in perfect working order." In their letter, the family wrote should Hanks oblige, they would keep the typewriter maintained and be sure to use it.
