In "Star Wars: The Last Jedi," Luke Skywalker returns and director of the film, Rian Johnson explained to the Business Insider how he figured out Luke's storyline. He said the first hurdle to get over was explaining why Luke was in a secluded island and not leaving that island. Johnson said an important part of getting over that hurdle was to remember that Luke is a hero and he does what he thinks is best for the galaxy. The path Johnson took was exploring Skywalker's guilt for believing he failed as a master Jedi by trying to show Ben Solo the ways of the force, only to realize his nephew is drawn to the dark side.
