British actor Roy Dotrice, who has well over 100 film and television credits to his name, died at the age of 94. His most recent role was on two episodes of Game of Thrones back in season 2 ? as Hallyne the Pyromancer.
He was born on the island of Guernsey on May 26, 1923. He became a solider with the Royal Air Force during World War II, despite being only 16-years-old. Dotrice was captured in 1942 and lived in a POW camp for three years. After the war ended and Dotrice was released he began to build an acting career. He studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and began to perform in regional theater in England. It was in the theater that he met his wife Kay, whom he married in 1947. They remained married until her death in 2007. He continued to do theater in both England and the United States, winning a Tony Award for appearing in A Moon for the Misbegotten on Broadway.
In 1957 ? the same year he won his Tony Award ? Dotrice played the role of Abe Gray for five episodes of the TV series Treasure Island. After that he played several classic theater roles in televised recordings of a number of plays. In the mid ?60s he was seen in the miniseries The War of the Roses and then guests starred on several TV series.
Dotrice continued to be seen on television on a number of shows, including Tales from the Crypt and Space 1999. It was in 1984 that he landed the biggest film role of his career ? that of Mozart?s father in the Academy Award-winning film Amadeus. Not long after, he got the role of Jacob ?Father? Wells on the series Beauty and the Beast. His final film role was in Hellboy II: The Golden Army in 2008 and his final filmed acting role was on two episodes of Game of Thrones, a series he had some history with.
Previous to the series coming to HBO, Dotrice narrated the audio books for the A Song of Ice and Fire series, the first of which landed him in the Guinness Book of World Records for the second time in his career ? this time for the highest number of character voices by a single actor. (He was previously entered into the book in the ?60s for the greatest number of solo performances due to him appearing in the one-man show Brief Life 1,782 times.) Due to his history with the George R.R. Martin books, Dotrice was originally offered the role of Grand Maester Pycelle which he accepted, but then had to turn down for health reasons. He finally appeared in the second season as Hallyne the Pyromancer.
Dotrice is survived by three children, and a legacy of roles on stage, screen, TV, radio, and audio books. He will be greatly missed.
