He isn't disappointed that some viewers disliked the movie because it was designed to be a "cautionary tale of what's happening to the planet." Aronofsky notes that reality can be hard for audiences to accept. The director said "it's hard, because I'm pointing at all of us saying, 'Look what's going on! Let's think about this!' I'm also guilty, I'm not any better." The movie currently holds an F on Cinemascore. Rex Reed, the legendary critic, says mother! is one of the worst films of all time.
