Lorde addressed her controversial performance at the MTV Video Music Awards, explaining that she had the flu. At the popular awards show, the 20-year-old singer danced on stage to her song "Homemade Dynamite" without singing. In an interview for the podcast "WTF with Marc Maron," Lorde said, "It's sort of embarrassing to watch someone experience intense joy. Way more than pain ? and I think that's why people find what I do quite disconcerting.
