Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and Oscar-nominated actor Sam Shepard has died at the age of 73. A family spokesman made the announcement on Monday, stating that Shepard died on Thursday at his home in Kentucky due to complications from Lou Gehrig's disease. Shepard, who was known for his cowboy demeanor and portrayals of the American West, produced 44 plays and numerous books, memoirs and short stories in his lifetime.
