"Star Trek: Discovery" star Sonequa Martin-Green has spoken out on the negative fan response to the diversity of the new series. At the "Star Trek: Discovery" panel at Comic-Con San Diego over the weekend, Martin-Green said to the audience that diversity ?has been part of the Star Trek universe from the beginning.? Backlash against the new series began following the release of the first trailer, which focused on two women of color. For some reason, some fans were upset by the diversity of the cast. The series also recently announced that Anthony Rapp is joining the show as the franchises' first openly gay character on a television series. "Star Trek: Discovery" premieres September 24th, 2017.
