th the ominous title of "The Last Jedi" and being the second installment in a new episodic trilogy, many fans are already assuming the newest Star Wars film will mirror the dramatic intensity of The Empire Strikes Back. When speaking with Fandango's Erik Davis at the D23 Expo, director Rian Johnson does say there are elements of Empire in The Last Jedi, but that he also aimed to capture the sense of fun prevalent in Return of the Jedi.
?The automatic temptation is to say, 'Well it?s a middle chapter, so it?s got kind of that Empire thing,?" the director revealed when asked about his inspirations for the film. "But at the same time, I really wanted to maintain the same sense of fun that J.J. [Abrams] had in The Force Awakens, that to some extent in Return Of The Jedi, which I was like 10 years old, that was prime for me when that came out, and the sense of playfulness, I think."
