Sony confirmed that Tom Hardy has signed on to play the titular Marvel supervillain Venom. The news was announced on Sony's Twitter account with a picture of Hardy and some production news for the film. Sony said the upcoming Marvel Universe film will be released on October 5, 2018 and production will start this fall. Venom is one of the most recognizable Spider-Man villains and Hardy already has previous experience playing a villain in Batman and The Dark Knight Rises.
