James Gunn took advice for the first 'Guardians of the Galaxy' movie from Joss Whedon. Gunn wrote and directed both installments of the Marvel Comics movie franchise, and has said that his original scripts fell flat when he gave them to fellow director Joss Whedon. Whedon wrote and directed the 'Avengers' and 'Avengers: Age of Ultron' movies. Gunn felt there wasn't enough of his own personality in the writing. Whedon told Gunn not to hold his style and sensibilities back and to add more of himself in the script. Gunn credits Whedon with giving him the vote of confidence he needed to make 'Guardians' a unique comic book franchise.
