Ian McKellen became an icon as Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings
but he had the change to play another magical mentor ? Albus Dumbledore.
So why didn't he?
Before his death, the original Dumbledore, Richard Harris, made some disparaging remarks about McKellen.
McKellen didn't feel he could take the part after that.
