Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman, who optioned the rights to Liane Moriarty's novel Big Little Lies before going on to produce and star in the show, also picked up the rights to her follow-up novel. Variety reported in August of 2016 that Witherspoon and Kidman would co-produce the adaptation, but it was unclear whether they would also star. The novel takes places over a single weekend and centers on a fateful neighborhood barbecue.
