According to Screenrant, Denzel Washington's "Fences" struggles to make the leap from the stage to the big screen. But it is kept afloat by the powerhouse performances of its leads. Fences serves as a great acting showcase for Washington and Viola Davis. Both actors obviously had practice their role, since they both won Tony Awards for their work in the play version. In the film version, they add subtle nuances to their characters that can't be seen in a play. Screenrant notes that film is not without some minor faults, including how the script feels somewhat dated on some of the more complicated sociopolitical issues. "Fences" is now playing in U.S. theaters.
