Now 15 years after the release of 'The Fellowship of the Ring', it's hard to imagine anyone other than Ian McKellan as the benevolent wizard Gandalf.
Earlier this year, Lord of the Rings actor Dominic Monaghan confirmed that director Peter Jackson had considered David Bowie for the role.
Casting director Amy Hubbard has offered some clarity on the situation, saying Bowie, who passed away in January of 2016, was "far too busy" to even audition for the role.
