The 2016 film Queen of Katwe is set in the Ugandan slum, Katwe, and tells the story of a ten year old girl, Phiona, who learns to play chess. The director of the acclaimed film, Mira Nair, discusses shooting on set in Katwe, saying, "I love the shooting. The challenge is the eye of the storm, how to capture life. I also shoot in real locations. Authenticity is a huge part of what gives me that life. Shooting in Katwe, the worst slum, it was the same.
