Mel Gibson says the backlash against 'The Birth of a Nation' director Nate Parker is "unfair".
The 'Hacksaw Ridge' director appeared with other filmmakers at a Hollywood Reporter event.
?He was cleared of all that stuff,? said Gibson. ?And it was years ago. You have to follow the system there. I think he?s innocent of all that stuff," continued Gibson. "The fact that he has to live with that stigma, and that it affects the art he does, is unfair.?
'The Birth of a Nation' also stars Parker, and tells the story of an 1830s slave rebellion in Virginia. Parker was accused of rape in 1999, but was acquitted. His accuser took her own life in 2012, a fact used to fan the flames of the controversy.
