Selena Gomez made her first public appearance in two and a half months at the 2016 American Music Awards. The singer took a break from the spotlight for mental and emotional health reasons. Gomez gave a very candid speech when she won for "Favorite Pop/Rock Female." She referred to the break she just took, and said: "I had to stop. Because I had everything?and I was absolutely broken inside." She added: "But if you are broken, you do not have to stay broken. ...one thing you should know about me is, I care about people. And thank you so much for this, this is for you."
