Singer, songwriter Bob Dylan will not travel to Stockholm, Sweden to receive his Nobel Prize for Literature in person. The Swedish Academy announced that Dylan explained that he was unable to attend the event in December due to "pre-existing commitments." Dylan told the Academy that he "feels very honored" by the award, and wished he could attend the ceremony. Dylan will be allowed to keep the award, but will need to present a Nobel Lecture within six months. Dylan is the first songwriter to win the award. The Academy is acknowledging him "for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition."
