Social media was in an uproar once word got out. Many users felt the two showed a lack of respect or cultural sensitivity. On Sunday, Hilary reached out via Twitter to apologize for the offense. The singer told followers that, at the time, she hadn't realized how she and Jason's outfits would be perceived. She tweeted, "It was not properly thought through. And I am truly from the bottom of my [heart] sorry."
