Suicide Squad director David Ayer was very eager to work with Shia LaBeouf again, after the actor starred in his World War II drama, Fury. Ayer was originally considering LaBeouf for the role that went to Scott Eastwood, but LaBeouf was wary of doing another blockbuster franchise after his experiences working on Transformers. LaBeouf said it wasn't his decision not to do the film. He told Variety, "I don?t think Warner Bros. wanted me. I went in to meet, and they were like, ?Nah, you?re crazy. You?re a good actor, but not this one."
