Star Trek Beyond screenwriter Simon Peg is responding to George Takei's criticism of making the character Sulu gay. The creative team behind the new film decided to make sulu homosexual partially as a tribute to Takei, who played the character on the original tv series and is a champion for gay rights. Takei has criticized the change, however, saying it isn't in keeping with Star Trek creator Gene Rodenberry's vision. Now Simon Peg, who wrote the film has weighed in, telling the guardian, quote, "We could have introduced a new gay character, but he or she would have been primarily defined by their sexuality, seen as the ?gay character?, rather than simply for who they are, and isn?t that tokenism??
