"The Free State of Jones" explores the construct of whiteness through a disaffected white character during the antebellum period.
While some critics diagnose it as suffering from a "white savior" complex, "Free State of Jones" is actually doing something much more significant with Matthew McConaughey's character. To borrow a phrase from "Grey's Anatomy" star Jesse Williams, this film exposes "this invention called whiteness."One achievement of "The Free State of Jones" is the way in which it imagines its protagonist forfeiting his ties to the Confederacy and consequently, the benefits of whiteness.
