Free State of Jones tells the story of real-life historical figure Newton Knight. Knight is a Mississippi farmer who serves in the Confederate army during the U.S. Civil War. As the war rages on, he grows increasingly disillusioned with how the Confederacy caters to the interests of wealthy Southerners .
