Cruise's packed schedule also includes Jack Reacher: Never Go Back. While the wait hasn?t been as long as for that planned Top Gun sequel, a four-year gap between films risks losing the built-in audience that enjoyed the first outing. The new Reacher, based on Lee Child?s book ?Never Go Back?, has been crafted as a ?standalone? feature that won?t require any catching up. The sequel brings Reacher back to his past, when he helps an army major who?s been wrongly accused of espionage. The major is played by Cobie Smulders, known by TV and moviegoers alike as an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., as well as the star of long-running series How I Met Your Mother.
