When 20th Century Fox announced that there would be a sequel to 1996's Independence Day, the first question on everyone's mind was, "Is Will Smith coming back?" In an interview about why Smith didn't return to the projec, Roland Emmerich, director of Independence Day: Resurgence said that Smith was pretty close to being a part of the sequel. Emmerich says, "In the very beginning, [ Will Smith] was on board," but eventually he opted out because they wanted to do a trilogy and Will did not have a good experience with his previous Men In Black trilogy. Independence Day: Resurgence lands in theaters June 24, 2016.
