Coachella has become a punching bag of sorts among high-minded, Pitchfork-reading music fans for becoming so big and mainstream that it's no longer a place to discover exciting new acts. In fact, weekend 1 in Indio was like a heat check to see just how far Coachella could take that hugeness. Much like in 2014, the list of "surprise" performances was so long that it felt like a one-man one-upmanship. After Kanye West's two surprise appearances Friday night, a guessing game ensued over who would turn up next. Would Kesha come out during Zedd's set? She did. Would Ice Cube reunite with N.W.A.? He did, and brought out Snoop and Common too. By the time Rihanna did come to the stage during Calvin Harris' closing set to perform "We Found Love" it wasn't much of a surprise at all. So, what happens next? Who knows, but it's sure fun to watch.
