During her opening monologue, Ellen DeGeneres spoke out against Mississippi's recently passed law that allows people to legally discriminate against the LGBT community. She began by telling her audience, "I'm not a political person, I'm really not," and went on to say, "When I see something wrong, I have to talk about it." DeGeneres went on to speak about her own personal experiences with discrimination, bringing up the time she was fired from her ABC sitcom.
