Being so quickly written off by many critics when he first announced his 2016 presidential campaign was apparently the first clue to SNL boss Lorne Michaels that Donald Trump would probably stick around for a while. While talking with the New York Times Magazine, the creator of Saturday Night Live said the situation reminded him of when Ronald Reagan announced his own bid for the White House. Michaels explained, "I remember in ?79, Democrats said, 'You know, Reagan?s an actor.' Like voters don?t know that. There?s a smugness to that attitude that causes the voting public to go, 'We?re smarter than that.'"
