VIDEO : Academy Execs Speak Out About Planned Diversity Changes

Executives from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences spoke out Wednesday about accusations that their pledge to diversify voting in the Academy was a concession to "political correctness". Academy Chief Executive Dawn Hudson said "unless you have the best artists voting on the Academy Awards, you don't have a real reflection of the best of our film culture." The Academy promised to double the number of women and people of color in its ranks by 2020. Hudson told reporters that the current makeup of the Academy was 24 percent women and 7 percent people of color. The Academy also intends to revoke the memberships of people who no longer work in the film industry. The mission to achieve diversity comes on the heels of complaints that the Oscars are not diverse enough and fail to recognize a diverse range of artist.
