On Friday, Jan. 15, South African authorities confirmed that hip-hop artist, activist and actor Yasiin Bey (formerly Mos Def) was detained after he attempted to leave the country to perform at a show in Ethiopia via using an unrecognizable world passport. The document, which is similar in appearance to a national passport, was declined by immigration officials at the Cape Town International Airport on Saturday. Bey was arrested Thursday and appeared in court on Friday, and upon investigation, it was revealed that his wife and mother of his four children had overstayed and were sojourning illegally. According to The Daily Beast, the situation has apparently driven the artist to retire from music and film entirely, stating that the country was "interfering with [his] ability to move or even fulfill [his] professional obligations." However, fear not. The musical artist also revealed that he will release a final album late 2016.
