Willow Smith released a surprise debut album on Friday, Dec. 11, 2015 after previously alluding to the date on Twitter without any other context. The archaeology-inspired name of the album is Ardipithecus, which holds significance to her personal growth as a recording artist. She tells The Fader, "Ardipithecus Ramidus is the scientific name of the first hominid bones found on earth. I wanted to name my musical compilation after it because, while I was making these songs I was in such a transitional state." The 15-year-old is credited as the sole songwriter on 14 out of the 15 tracks on the album, and the sole producer on 10.
