In a revealing interview, the 29-year-old entertainer said she felt alienated from her contemporary pop cultural community and it was the classics that brought her back: In the fall of 2014, ?Cheek to Cheek,? the album of jazz standards she recorded with music legend Tony Bennett, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, earning her a sixth Grammy (for best traditional pop vocal album) and a successful global tour. She followed that up with an attention-grabbing ?The Sound of Music? medley at the 2015 Academy Awards, where she received praise from Julie Andrews. Then the entertainer made forays into TV, taking the part of vampire fashionista The Countess in ?American Horror Story: Hotel,? earning critical acclaim and drawing 12.2 million viewers with the first episode. But the pop star continues to be a crusader for justice: Earlier this year she released the song ?Til It Happens to You,? co-written with Diane Warren, aimed at fostering empathy with victims of sexual assault.
