According to emails uncovered from the Sony hack, Smith's representatives, the film's production company, and even director Peter Landesman discussed altering the film and removing script scenes that may provoke the NFL.
The upcoming film places Smith as the doctor who discovered the link between football players and brain trauma.
The trailer markets the film as a whistleblower story, hinting at the NFL's efforts to downplay the situation.
However, director Landesman told the Times the script edits will not alter the thrust of the story.
