For the film based on a 2011 novel, Hollywood met with NASA to understand the extreme circumstances of the film's plot in a scientific manner, and how to present that on-screen accurately.

Jim Green, director of NASA's planetary science arm, stated it was a smooth pairing that made the film easier for the agency to endorse.
