Lester Holt, a veteran of NBC News, will be the only black person to anchor a major network's core news show as Brian Williams officially steps aside under pressure.
NBC officially announced on Thursday that Holt would be taking permanent hold of the anchor chair for the network's cornerstone "Nightly News" broadcast.
Holt had been filling in for Williams, who stepped away from the network in an unpaid hiatus after he was found to have embellished on his reporting from war zones in the Middle East. Williams' falsehoods shook the foundations of NBC News and caused the network to bring back Andy Lack, an executive from its golden days, as chairman.
Holt's appointment was also an opportunity for Williams to show remorse in his first public comments since the suspension. Significantly, Williams' apology was included in official NBC statement announcing Holt's elevation to the anchor spot, pairing Holt's success directly with Williams' downfall.??
